Eemshaven is Northwest Europe energy port

About a third of all energy produced in the Netherlands comes from Eemshaven. With an installed capacity of 8000 MW, Eemshaven is therefore an energy port of size. Major energy producers operate three power plants and in and around Eemshaven there are 110 onshore wind turbines.

Eemshaven also plays a prominent role in the development of offshore wind farms. Both in the construction of the wind farms and in the maintenance of the wind turbines. In addition, Eemshaven is an important energy hub with direct undersea high-voltage connections to Norway and Denmark.

The port also hosts several solar parks and is a very suitable location for the future production of green hydrogen. An LNG (liquefied natural gas) terminal has been operational at Eemshaven since 2022.

Through our membership in the World Energy Cities Partnership, Groningen is part of a strong global network of cities shaping the future of energy. Located in the heart of the North Sea region, we are working with partners to connect offshore wind to land, strengthen energy security, and build smarter and more sustainable energy systems. Supported by a strong ecosystem of universities, applied sciences institutions, research centres and innovative businesses, we are turning energy challenges into opportunities. We warmly welcome our fellow WECP members to Groningen to experience this transformation firsthand.
